Contested by several observers, the sulphurous Gambian referee, Bakary Gassama, was not retained by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) with a view to the African Cup of Nations, CAN 2024who will argue in Ivory Coast of January 13 au February 11th next ones.
The announcement was made this Thursday September 14 by the governing body of African football which unveiled the list of 32 referees preselected for the 34th edition of the most prestigious African competition.

Bakary Gassama and the lively controversy over the Algeria-Cameroon dam
It should be remembered that Bakary Gassama had created a lively controversy during the return match of the play-offs of the World Cup 2022won at the last minute by the Cameroon facing theAlgeria (1-2)March 29, 2022 at Blida.
The man in black is notably accused by the Algerian Football Federation for having favored the Indomitable Lions. The latter notably contacted FIFA to have the match replayed but the world body ignored the Algerian request. While the question concerning the presence of Gassama in Ivory Coast worried football fans, the CAF thus put an end to the suspense by preferring not to call on the services of the Gambian referee in the country of Elephants.
It should also be noted that among the six referees Africans present at the World Cup 2022only the Algerian Mustapha Ghorbal was retained to officiate during the matches of the CAN 2024. Famous African whistles such as the South African Victor Gomeswho led the last final of the CANthe Zambian Janny Sikazwethe Senegalese Maguette Ndiaye and the Rwandan Salima Mukansanga were curiously not selected for the African Cup of Nations.

The 24 countries qualified for the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations:
Ivory Coast, Senegal, Democratic Republic of Congo, Cameroon, Mali, Burkina Faso, Guinea, Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Nigeria, Ghana, Egypt, Gambia, Tanzania, South Africa, Zambia, Equatorial Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Cape Verde, Angola, Mozambique, Mauritania, Namibia.
