Controversial Fundraising Campaign for Officer Who Shot Nahel Raises Nearly a Million Euros

The fundraising campaign set up for the officer who shot Nahel has already raised almost a million euros in three days. Tens of thousands of people have already contributed, much to the dismay of the government. “Inappropriate and outrageous”, it sounds there. A similar one initiative for Nahel’s mother brought in less than two tons, so more than five times less.

The support action GoFundMe was set up by Jean Messiha, the ex-spokesman of the far-right presidential candidate Eric Zemmour. “A boost for Florian M., the agent in Nanterre who did his job but now pays a heavy price for it,” the description reads. Tens of thousands of sympathizers have already contributed, amounts ranging from 5 to 3,000 euros.

The initiative arouses a great deal of displeasure, especially among the left. Olivier Faure, the leader of the socialist opposition, personally addresses GoFundMe in a tweet. “This is a shameful fundraiser. By supporting an officer suspected of voluntary manslaughter, you are perpetuating the huge rift. Close this account!’, it sounds.

resentment

The call was shared en masse by left-wing politicians, but there is also resentment within the government. “Jean Messiha is still fanning the fire of the riots. The huge amount he has already collected for that agent is inappropriate and outrageous,” said Éric Bothorel, a party member of President Emmanuel Macron.

For the police unions, this support is heartening. “As soon as questions are raised about an agent’s actions, he is on his own. So it’s no wonder that colleagues or friends often take action themselves to help the family,” union leader Christophe Couvy responds.

‘Pain in the heart’

In this case, parallel to the large fundraising campaign, there is also a smaller-scale initiative by friends. More than 53,000 euros have already been collected there, according to the French news channel BFM TV.

Nahel’s grandmother does not understand that Florian M. can still count on so much sympathy. “This hurts the heart. But he will be punished like everyone else. I have faith in the court,” he said.
