Asylum seekers who report to Ter Apel will again have to spend the night in the waiting areas of the Immigration and Naturalization Service (IND) this weekend. The Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers (COA) warns about this. The organization, together with the Association of Dutch Municipalities (VNG) and Vluchtelingenwerk Nederland, urgently appeals to the Senate to declare the controversial dispersal law non-controversial.
The dispersal law should ensure that asylum seekers are better distributed across the country. The law is controversial because, in extreme cases, municipalities can be forced to accept an asylum seeker center, even if there is no support among residents. Three weeks ago, the law received a majority in the House of Representatives.
Next Tuesday, the Senate will vote on the SGP’s proposal to declare the law controversial, in order to postpone the law. If a majority of the Senate votes in favor of the proposal, the dispersal law will be added to the list of controversial topics and will only be discussed when there is a new cabinet, reports RTV North.
The COA, VNG and Vluchtelingenwerk Nederland want the law to be dealt with as quickly as possible and believe that the dispersal law is a first step towards “a structural solution for the difficult reception of asylum seekers”. The law is separate from the discussion about a possible inflow restriction and strengthens solidarity among municipalities, they say.
According to the COA, there is still a shortage of shelter places and the pressure on the registration center in Ter Apel remains high. “The situation is expected to remain unchanged next weekend.”
