Hangzhou, CNN Indonesia —
Long jump coach I Made Sukariata was disappointed with the referee’s decision to annul Maria Londa’s jump in the women’s long jump final at the 2023 Asian Games, China, Monday (2/10).
“It’s a bit disappointing. Actually, the officers need to be more careful. OK, there are technologies. Why was that after it was disallowed but it was repeated again,” said I Made Sukariata.
Maria Londa’s coach and husband also admitted that the controversial decision disturbed Maria Londa’s psychology, who was competing at the Hangzhou National Stadium, China.
“Concentration will definitely be disturbed. Especially on this number, while this number requires a lot of concentration,” said Made Sukariata.
Indonesian female long jump athlete Maria Londa had to finish 10th after only recording a best jump of 5.98 meters.
Maria Londa’s failure to win a medal in the long jump final at the 2023 Asian Games was due to the referee’s controversial decision in the third jump.
When Maria Londa made the third jump, the referee deemed the Indonesian athlete to have committed a foul, so her jump had to be disallowed.
In fact, the starting board step line detection device did not turn on, which should mean there was no foul.
Maria Londa immediately protested to the match officials. The reason is, he feels he has not committed a violation. Moreover, Maria Londa’s third jump looked quite far.
There was a long debate between Maria and the match officials. The match was delayed for quite a long time because of this controversial decision.
After a long wait, the competition officials finally decided that Maria Londa would make the fourth to sixth jumps, which should only be done by athletes who qualify for the top eight. Meanwhile, Maria Londa was in ninth position when the controversy occurred.
Maria also made the fourth, fifth, then sixth jump. But after the match on the Asian Games web it was decided that Maria Londa’s third jump was ultimately annulled.
Maria Londa only got the best jump of 5.98 meters. This figure puts Maria Londa in 10th place.
“The evaluation will involve a lot of practice matches and finalizing the start. The target must be better than 6.43, which was the last best score in January 2023,” said I Made Sukariata.
