Controversial Decision by Nobel Foundation regarding Ambassadors of Russia, Iran, and Belarus at Nobel Prize Banquet

The Nobel Foundation backed away from a decision to invite the ambassadors of Russia, Iran and Belarus to a banquet on the occasion of this year’s Nobel Prizes in Stockholm.

Details: The foundation drew attention to the fact that the decision to invite all ambassadors to the Nobel Prize ceremony, in accordance with previous practice, caused a strong reaction.

“The reason for this decision was that we consider it important and right to disseminate as widely as possible the values and messages that the Nobel Prize stands for,” the foundation explained, adding that this is why last year the Nobel Peace Prize was shared by human rights activists in Russia, Belarus and Ukraine.

“We are aware of the strong reaction in Sweden, which completely overshadowed this message. Therefore, the Nobel Foundation board decided to repeat last year’s exception to the regular practice – not to invite the ambassadors of Russia, Belarus and Iran to the Nobel Prize ceremony in Stockholm,” the Nobel Foundation said in a statement.

However, all ambassadors will be invited to the ceremony in Oslo, as happened before.

As you know, five of the six Nobel Prizes are awarded annually in Stockholm after a nomination process that is kept secret for the next 50 years. And the Nobel Peace Prize is awarded in Oslo, where separate celebrations take place.

The current laureates will be announced in early October, and the award ceremonies will take place on December 10, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death.

This week, the Nobel Foundation announced its intention to invite diplomats of all statesaccredited in Sweden – that is, Russian and Belarusian too – to a banquet on the occasion of the Nobel Prizes in Stockholm, unlike last year, when representatives of the embassies of Russia and Belarus weren’t invited.

In response to this the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry saidthat the Kremlin will react to such a decision only by strengthening the sense of impunity and new crimes.

The decision was also heavily criticized by politicians in Sweden: some are planning boycott the event.
