Controversial Decision by Captain Zach Johnson during Ryder Cup Sunday Singles Match

It was on the 16th hole of the match between Justin Thomas/Jordan Spieth and Justin Rose/Robert MacIntyre that the situation that the entire golf world is talking about occurred.

Rose and MacIntyre were three up at the time (leading by three holes), and with three holes to play, it meant that Thomas and Spieth had to win the remaining holes to take anything from the match.

MacIntyre had just hit the green on the short par 4 hole, which really put the pressure on Thomas and Spieth. They most likely had to make eagle to keep the match alive.

Blended in from the sideline

As Spieth naturally pulled up the driver from the bag, captain captain Zach Johnson suddenly approached the American star for a little chat.

The discussion ended with Spieth changing his club to a 3-wood, and then followed up by hitting the ball into the water.

The hole ended in a tie (both Rose and Thomas made birdie), and with two holes to go, the match was thus decidedly in favor of Europe.

Butchered by the American media

Johnson’s maneuver has caused strong reactions in the entire golf world, not least in the American media.

– Zach Johnson tells the best players in the world which club to hit with? He acts like a college coach, writes renowned journalist Dan Rapaport on Twitter.

– He makes Jordan Spieth change from driver to 3-wood and then he hits it in the water. It is not true! What a scandal, writes Alex Myers in Golf Digest.

– Leadership of the highest order. Completely incomprehensible, writes podcast profile Mark Fox.

Johnson has already been exposed to massive criticism during the Ryder Cup, both for team selection and the composition of the various playing pairs.

Fortunately for Johnson, it ended with American victory in the other three afternoon matches on Saturday. Thus, the position is 10.5-5.5 in favor of Europe before Sunday’s final singles matches.

Europe therefore only needs to win four of the total of 12 matches to take the overall victory.
