The diocese of Var announced this Friday, February 2, that it would abandon a day of “awareness of secularism” planned for March at the Zénith in Toulon and intended for teachers of Catholic education.
“In order to remain in an attitude of listening and appeasement after the publication (…) of an article against this awareness day, it seemed more reasonable to us to cancel,” writes the diocesan director of Catholic education in Var, Xavier Pion, in an internal letter that Agence France-Presse (AFP) obtained.
Tuesday January 30, the daily Release had revealed the presence of Mgr Dominique Rey, the bishop of Fréjus-Toulon, considered very conservative, among other speakers. This morning should have made it possible, according to the letter, to offer “insights on how Catholic teaching could support secularism”.
“As if we wanted to reinvent the Church”
“I believe that such and such people have become a little panicked, as if we were going to reinvent secularism. The Church does not have this pretension of imposing on the world the values which are its own”, Mgr Rey reacted to France 3 Côte-d’Azurrecalling that he is the author of a work on “the place of secularism in the Church”.

This promoter of a strengthened Catholicism is criticized for his style which may have been inspired by American evangelical pastors and his policy of welcoming new communities, targeting traditionalists and followers of the Latin mass for example, and other charismatics , particularly from Latin America.
Reason why the Vatican decided in November, after an audit mission, to appoint him a “coadjutor”, a sort of deputy, Mgr François Touvet, who will ultimately take over from him.
