Controversial British influencer Andrew Tate is popular, especially among young men, but Tate has his downsides. He is now in custody on suspicion of sexual violence. How is it possible that this influencer has a huge fan base? “This is also a complex world for boys. They are also looking for examples,” says psychologist Thijs Launspach in the new AT5 youth program Now Are We.
Together with the mayor, the Launspach psychologist and the young people will talk about the Andrew Tate phenomenon. They all agree: it became so famous because of the addictive algorithms on social media.

Halsema is shocked by how Tate thinks about women. “You see there is a very old-fashioned view of women among men and boys. They are said to be property, women must be discreet and may not have had many sexual partners. For boys, a high body count gives you status and a girl is quickly considered a slut.
Student Julien says boys are also insecure. “It’s not just girls who are insecure. What I love about Andrew Tate is that he makes sure guys go to the gym and take good care of themselves. He also says things negative (mayor, red.) Simply put it’s really not possible at this time.”
“You see there is a need among young people to be recognized as men. Many boys are looking for that”
Halsema: “You see that there is a need among young men to be recognized as men. Many boys find this, they don’t know how to behave in a club or how to approach girls or other people. I can I can think of the need. I grew up in the 80’s.
Launspach has long called for a ban on social media for young people under the age of 16. “I wouldn’t repeat it now, but I think the problem is not Andy Tate himself. It is the problem is that these types of examples are caused by the technology we have now come to your home all the time men in this world.
