Controversial Appointments of Sons and Nephews in Zimbabwean Cabinet

President Zimbabwe Emmerson Mnangagwa appointed and appointed his own sons and nephews to occupy positions vice Minister in his cabinet. The opposition called the newly installed government the ‘worst’ government since the country’s independence.

As reported by AFP, Wednesday (13/9/2023), at the inauguration ceremony held in the capital Harare on Tuesday (12/9) local time, more than 20 ministers and 10 deputy ministers swore in the president who won a second term in office in a month. then in the election it became a dispute.

International observers said Zimbabwe’s elections did not meet democratic standards.

“I am Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa, the President of the Republic of Zimbabwe, calling on all of you to take the Ministerial oath,” said Mnangagwa who is now 80 years old.

In an appointment described by Zimbabwe’s leading opposition party as ‘very worrying’, Mnangagwa’s 34-year-old son Kudakwashe David Mnangagwa was installed as Deputy Finance Minister.

Mnangagwa’s 45-year-old nephew, Tongai Mnangagwa, was appointed Deputy Minister of Tourism.

“This appointment is surprising. Throughout yesterday, I couldn’t believe it,” David told reporters after he was appointed.
