Controversial Appointments and Actions by the Liberal Democratic Party Under Scrutiny

At the General Council meeting on the 29th, the Liberal Democratic Party appointed Mio Sugita, a member of the House of Representatives (Proportional China), who has been criticized for repeated discriminatory words and actions, as acting chair of the party’s environment section, and a photo taken during the party’s training in France was brought into question. Personnel decisions were made, including appointing House of Councilors member Rui Tamatsukawa (Osaka constituency) as deputy secretary general. Sugita was found to have violated human rights by the Sapporo Legal Affairs Bureau this month for posting insults against the Ainu people, and the party’s stance is being questioned.

Ms. Sugita posted on social networking site (SNS) about the participants of the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women held in 2016, saying, “Chima Chogori and even cosplay ladies in Ainu traditional costumes appeared.” He was appointed as Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Internal Affairs and Communications by Prime Minister Fumio Kishida in August last year, but he was dismissed in December after being questioned in the Diet over issues including his depiction of LGBTQ (sexual minorities) as “unproductive.” It was done.

At a press conference after the Board of Governors meeting, Chairman of the Board of Governors Yutaka Moriyama pointed out about Mr. Sugita, “Discrimination must never occur. It is important for politicians to fulfill their accountability.”

Yuichiro Ishikawa, a professor of constitutional law at Seigakuin University, said, “In his recent speech to the United Nations, the prime minister appealed for respect for human dignity, but he appointed Mr. Sugita, who has repeatedly made discriminatory remarks. At this level, his approval rating is low. “They are disrespecting the people by thinking that it will not affect the government.”

Meanwhile, in July of this year, Matsukawa posted on social media a photo of herself posing with the Eiffel Tower in the background, a tourist attraction in Paris, France, which she visited as part of an overseas training program for the party’s Women’s Bureau. She resigned as the women’s director general after a flood of criticism for her training, which also used party funds, and could be seen as a tourist trip. Secretary-General Toshimitsu Mogi also complained at a press conference that it was “undermining the public’s trust.”

The Board of Governors also approved appointing Minoru Terada, a member of the House of Representatives (Hiroshima 5th Ward), who was removed from the position of Minister of Internal Affairs and Communications after a series of scandals involving political funding, etc., to serve as acting chairman of the board.
