Controlling HIV Transmission in Ambon City: Successes and Strategies

Ambon, Maluku Tribune : The rate of HIV in Ambon City is increasing very rapidly, for this reason the Ambon City Government, in this case the Health Service, has succeeded in controlling the rate of transmission of HIV cases.

,”The city government is quick to deal with the rate of HIV cases in Ambon, why are we fast? because all this time we have been picking up the ball,” said the Head of the Ambon City Health Service, Drg. Wendy Pelupessy, M.Kes, Wednesday (13/9/2023) in a press conference held by the City Health Service together with the Pelangi Foundation Team, in the media center room of Ambon City.

According to Pelupessy, there are several community health centers that have been prepared to carry out examinations and have carried out pick-up or detection of all people who come from places where there is a potential for HIV transmission.

“Therefore, we must detect cases or infectious diseases early,” said the head of the city health department.

He admitted that several years ago, due to the lack of early detection in the field, more AIDS cases were discovered

“Now Katong (We) are grateful, grateful in quotation marks that what we are currently finding is that more people are in the HIV condition, so that those concerned who take HIV medication regularly will not fall into the condition of AIDS which can cause death,” he said.

He explained that the HIV case was like an iceberg, if it was not detected early, extraordinary transmission would occur

It was also explained that HIV transmission can occur through free sex, and currently occurs mostly through free sex, while currently it is rarely found through injection needles.

Furthermore, transmission from mother to child can also occur, and all health centers currently carry out early detection, but according to him, this is now rarely seen.

Pelupessy said that this transmission depends on the behavior of the community itself. If you already know about the rapid transmission caused by casual sex, try to avoid it.

“If you already know that the cause is casual sex, don’t have casual sex, be loyal to your partner, even if you have casual sex, we must use protection instead of having uncontrolled casual sex,” he said.

To break the chain of HIV transmission, the Health Service, together with the Pelangi Foundation and Commission 1 of the Ambon City DPRD and related OPDs have visited places that are considered to be at risk and on this occasion have also carried out health screening for other infectious diseases.

For HIV cases from 1994 until now in the city of Ambon, the cumulative number is 2370 and decreases when someone dies.

“But it increases when there are new cases that Katong looks for and we treat like that,” he explained

For the cumulative number of AIDS cases from 1994 to 2023, there are 993 cases, and those who are still taking medication to date are 1176

Regarding the new cases discovered yesterday, according to Pelupessy, from January to August 2023, there were 184 people.

“When sorted according to the Mayor’s instructions, there were 94 new cases with Ambon city ID cards, while there were 90 people with ID cards outside Ambon city,” he said.
