However, heart failure is often diagnosed late because the symptoms that appear resemble those of other diseases, such as the most common being easily tired, short of breath, coughing or shortness of breath, swelling (edema) especially in the legs, and bloating or pain in the abdomen. stomach.

In Indonesia, the prevalence of heart failure reaches 5% and is more common in men (66%) than women (34%). Heart failure can occur at any age, but it becomes more common with age.

Compared with Europe and America, the demographic age of heart failure patients in Southeast Asia is younger. In Indonesia, about 60% of women and 56% of men under the age of 50 experience heart failure. This means that heart failure in Indonesia is mostly experienced by the productive age population.

In commemoration of Heart Failure Awareness Day which falls in May every year, Novartis Indonesia in collaboration with the Heart Failure Working Group, the Indonesian Association of Heart and Blood Vessel Specialists (Pokja Heart Failure PERKI), held a media education activity themed “Dealing with Heart Failure: Control Your Cardiovascular Risk, Manage Heart Failure Well”.

Dr. Siti Elkana Nauli, SpJP(K), FIHA, explained, “The Pokja data show that the most common causes of heart failure are uncontrolled underlying disease conditions (hypertension, diabetes, obesity) or part of the course of natural underlying diseases (age, smoking, congenital disorders),”.

dr. Nauli continued, “Heart failure is indeed a serious condition, unfortunately many of the patients are not aware that they have heart failure. Even though the symptoms caused greatly reduce their quality of life,”.
