Contractor started cleaning up A1, highway possibly closed until the end of afternoon

The cleanup work will continue until the end of the afternoon, a spokesperson for Rijkswaterstaat expects.

Asbestos

“We are working hard to clean the road, but it is expected that the contractor will be busy with the work for quite some time. We are now taking into account the end of the afternoon.”

The asbestos that was on the road has now been cleaned up, but the rest of the rubbish still has to be removed.

Threats

The contractors who were initially supposed to clean the road withdrew after threats and intimidation, the spokesman said. The spokesperson could not say which company has now taken up the job.

“Within Rijkswaterstaat we looked further at other contractors who could do the work. Fortunately, we found them then.”

File

Traffic from Hengelo can take a detour via Almelo and Zwolle on the A35 and A28, the ANWB reports. There is now a traffic jam of about 8 kilometers at the Voorst exit and road users have a delay of 45 minutes.

Rijkswaterstaat calls on road users who set out this morning to check the traffic information carefully and to be extra alert on the road. “During the day all kinds of things can happen, especially in certain parts of the country like the east and the north. It’s very unpredictable, so be aware of that when you go out on the road.”
