The ‘GE-BOND’ consortium, formed between the Grid Solutions division of GE Renewable Energy and BOND Civil & Utility Construction, announces that it has been awarded an EPC (engineering, procurement and construction) contract with Empire Offshore Wind, a joint venture formed between Equinor and bp to provide an Empire Wind 1 digital onshore substation, one of New York’s first offshore wind farm projects.
The Empire Wind 1 project is to span 80,000 acres in federal waters, an average of 20 miles south of Long Island, and power more than 500,000 New York homes.
The GE-BOND consortium will be responsible for the delivery of the onshore substation and the Brooklyn interconnecting cable, as well as the design and supply of the high voltage electrical systems for the offshore substation.
Development of the onshore and offshore substations will begin this year, while construction is scheduled for the second half of 2023.
