Jakarta, CNN Indonesia —
While there are many options for preventing and controlling pregnancy with contraceptives, 2018 research shows women bear most of the contraception burden.
In fact, men can also assume the same responsibility and use safe male contraceptives. Here are a number of male contraceptive options.
There are various types of male contraceptives, ranging from permanent, temporary, to natural.
1. Vasectomy
There is only one permanent male contraceptive method to prevent pregnancy, namely a vasectomy.
Vasectomy is a method of contraception that involves cutting the vas deferens (sperm ducts). This method is classified as a minor surgery. Quoted from Urology Health, this method can block sperm from reaching the ejaculated penis.
The vasectomy method is rated as the most effective contraceptive or family planning method than other male contraceptives.
Research shows only 1-2 women out of 1,000 people who get pregnant after one year of intercourse with a vasectomy partner.
2. Condoms
Condoms are a popular male contraceptive, easily accessible and can prevent pregnancy and the risk of sexually transmitted infections.
Condoms come in a variety of shapes, colors, and sizes, and some include a spermicidal lubricant to help kill sperm.
Most condoms are made of latex, but people with a latex allergy may use condoms made of other materials, such as polyurethane or polyisoprene. It is important to check the instructions or labels for potential allergens.
When following proper usage guidelines, condoms can be up to 98 percent effective. However, many people do not use it properly all the time until there is a possibility of a leak.
With regular use, its effectiveness is about 85 percent.
3. Spermicide
Spermicides are usually jellies, creams, membranes or foams containing chemicals to kill sperm. When using spermicide as the only means of contraception, it is necessary to apply it into the vagina before penetration.
With regular use, the spermicide failure rate can reach about 21 percent. However, the effectiveness of this type of male contraceptive can be increased when used in conjunction with condoms.
4. Fertility time check
Knowing your partner’s fertile period is one of the natural male contraceptives.
This method focuses on monitoring the female partner’s menstrual cycle to determine the possible time of ovulation. Couples can then avoid sexual intercourse during this fertile period.
In this case, men can support the female partner by charting the menstrual cycle, learning about approaches, and cooperating when it is necessary to abstain from sex.
