Faced with difficulties in accessing and purchasing books in the different communities of the capital city, professor Adilson Gonçalves together with a group of friends decided to create, in October 2020, the “Contr’Ignorância” library in the streets of Marçal
The space that beat the pandemic, opened at a time when the world was fighting Covid-19, currently has just over 2,000 books including novels, short stories, poetry, law techniques, accounting, economics and health by Angolan and foreigners.
Initially, the library operated in the backyard of Dona Maria Contreiras, considered the matriarch of “Contr’Ignorância”, whose doors were open for three months, from Monday to Friday.
Even with few resources, such as the lack of shelves to display the books, and, in a non-standard space, Adilson and his companions, a group of eight young people, with just 116 books, decided to start this project that works with the aim of guaranteeing book promotion and recreational activities in that community.
But it was in December 2020 that they decided to have a party in the street to celebrate Christmas, which caught the attention of people who previously felt inhibited about going out into the backyard. Adilson saw a great turnout at this event, which caught the attention of residents who were curious to know what it was all about.
