Continuous Hiccups Could Be a Symptom of Covid-19

Harianjogja.com, JAKARTA – Coviod-19 has many symptoms related not only to the respiratory system, but other body systems. According to research, one of the symptoms that could be a sign that someone is infected with the Corona virus is hiccups.

Reporting from Express UK, Monday (4/1/2021) in a recent 2020 case study, a 64-year-old man was found to have persistent hiccups as the only symptom of the Covid-19 virus he was experiencing.

Study subjects visited an outpatient clinic after experiencing hiccups for 72 hours. Blood tests and lung imaging were performed, revealing evidence of lung infection and a low white blood cell count. The subject also tested positive for Covid-19.

In another 2020 case study, a 62-year-old man was also found to have hiccups as a symptom of the new coronavirus. The subject had experienced hiccups for four days before heading to the hospital.

Upon admission, further testing showed similar findings in the man’s lungs, as well as a low white blood cell and platelet count. He also tested positive for the new coronavirus with symptoms of hiccups.

Nevertheless, it is still important to note that hiccups represent a potentially rare side effect of Covid-19. If people experience hiccups, it is not certain that they will test positive for the corona virus.

When should hiccups be taken seriously about Covid-19?

The hiccups should last a few minutes or hours and the person usually takes a sitting position so that the hiccups disappear. The National Health Service (NHS) says there is often no clear reason why someone has hiccups.

However, some people find certain things that trigger this hiccupping phenomenon, such as people experiencing stress, strong emotions such as excitement, or even when eating and drinking.

Meanwhile, the health agency recommends that people see a general practitioner if the hiccups have lasted more than 48 hours or are experienced with high levels and intensity, which affect daily activities.

Later, the general practitioner will find out whether the hiccups you are experiencing are caused by a health condition or the medication you are taking. Treating the condition or changing medications should stop the hiccups.

“If the cause is not clear, doctors can prescribe a drug called chlorpromazine to treat hiccups. However, it doesn’t work for everyone, ”said the NHS.

Meanwhile, the British government’s advice remains that if people experience the three main symptoms of Covid-19, namely high temperature, persistent cough, and loss or change in their sense of smell and taste, they must undergo an examination.
