Jakarta –
Sydney Authority, Australia reported a record number of new COVID-19 cases and five deaths from corona virus this Thursday (5/8). This record was set as authorities expanded lockdown (lockdown) in Australia’s largest city to neighboring territories.
As reported by AFP news agency, Thursday (5/8/2021), six weeks after five million Sydney residents were ordered to stay at home, the number of new infections in the state of New South Wales increased by 262 cases in a day. This is the largest daily number of cases since the pandemic corona virus started.
Health officials say nearly all of the new cases have occurred in Sydney, but several cases of infection in other districts prompted New South Wales state leader Gladys Berejiklian to expand stay-at-home restrictions.
Five positive cases of coronavirus in Newcastle – a coastal city of 320,000 people north of Sydney – prompted authorities to close schools and order residents to stay at home for at least a week.
It said five people in their 60s-80s had died in Sydney in the past 24 hours. None of them have received the full vaccination.
“I can’t stress enough how important it is for people of all ages to come and get the vaccine,” Berejiklian said.
Currently, only 20 per cent of Australians have been fully vaccinated, due to acute supply problems and vaccine hesitancy.
