Efforts to find victims as a result earthquake powerful magnitude 7 in Turkey and Greece keep doing it. To date 14 people have been declared were killed.
As reported by AFP, Saturday (31/10/2020), the rescue team continues to dig up the concrete that collapsed in the earthquake with their bare hands in search of survivors. To date, a total of 14 people have died in Turkey and Greece.
Not only casualties, the earthquake also injured nearly 257 people. Rescue operations are still ongoing and several people have been evacuated.
Apart from tearing down buildings, the earthquake also caused a small tsunami on the Aegean island of Samos. The waves of the sea are also turning roads into rushing rivers in a city on Turkey’s west coast.
Most of the damage from the earthquake occurred around the Aegean city of Izmir, Turkey. The city is reported to have three million residents and is filled with high-rise apartment blocks.
Meanwhile, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis extended his condolences to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan after the earthquake struck. Greece and Turkey have been in conflict in recent months due to tensions in the East Mediterranean. But this time both countries suffered damage due to the earthquake.
“I just called the President (Erdogan) to send my condolences for the tragic loss of life as a result of the earthquake that hit our two countries,” said Mitsotakis, in his official Twitter account.
“Whatever our differences, these are times when our people need to stand together,” he explained.
