Continued Rainfall Heightens Concerns for Residents in Jackson Heights

It is expected to rain heavily again this weekend in our area. This would mark the fifth consecutive weekend of rain in the city.

Some residents of Jackson Heights and surrounding areas are worried that the rain will make their routine this Saturday difficult.

Sam Zavala, Corona resident, says: “Yes, it worries me a lot, because I work this weekend because the trains are affected and late at night makes it difficult to return home.”

“Wait to see that the city really doesn’t go into chaos, that one comes back and what my colleague said about the subways happens again because that is what affects New Yorkers the most: mobility, closed streets,” adds Diana. Cross.

The National Weather Service announced that a cold front is expected to bring isolated showers and thunderstorms to the city and Long Island.

This Friday, both the city and state governments are asking New Yorkers to prepare for heavy rain and the possibility of flash flooding.

Governor Hochul advises New Yorkers to prepare their homes and vehicles and to use caution when driving.

Hochul indicates that state agencies will be ready during the storm to assist local governments as needed.

Separately, New York City Comptroller Brad Lander announced that he is launching an investigation to evaluate how the City is implementing the measures and protocols established after Hurricane Ida.

“Extreme weather is a matter of life and death for New Yorkers. We must ensure that we are doing everything we can to implement the plans we have already made and everything we reasonably can to accelerate action,” Lander said.

With more rain forecast for this weekend, Queens Councilman Shekar Krishnan has been distributing flood barriers in Jackson Heights.

“It is a crisis that we are facing frequently and that is why we need those preparations before the storm,” says Krishnan.

And that’s what many neighbors are doing.

Most of the rain is expected to fall Saturday morning and early afternoon.

For Sunday there is no rain forecast for most of our area.
