Continue to supply weapons, Putin warns Macron and Scholz

MOSCOW – President Russia Vladimir Putin has warned the President French Emmanuel Macron and Chancellor German Olaf Scholz against increasing the supply of weapons to Ukraine . Putin said it could lead to further destabilization.

Kremlin said Putin made the remarks during a three-way phone call with the leaders of France and Germany on Saturday in which he warned against continued Western arms shipments to Ukraine, and blamed conflict disruptions to global food supplies on Western sanctions.

The Kremlin said Putin told Macron and Scholz that resuming arms supplies to Ukraine was “dangerous”, and he warned of the risk of further destabilizing the situation and exacerbating the humanitarian crisis.

“During the 80-minute call, Macron and Scholz in return urged an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine and the withdrawal of Russian troops from the country,” a spokesman for the German chancellor was quoted as saying. Al JazeeraSunday (29/5/2022).

The spokesman also said the two European leaders urged Putin to engage in serious and direct negotiations with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to end the fighting.

The Kremlin’s release of the three-way call said the Russian leader reiterated the openness of the Russian side to the resumption of dialogue, without mentioning the possibility of direct talks between Putin and Zelenskyy.

Talks between the Russian and Ukrainian delegations have been held both in person and via video link since the Russian military offensive but have recently stalled.

The Kremlin also said that Putin stressed during an in-depth exchange of views with Macron and Scholz that Russia is working to establish a peaceful life in Mariupol and other liberated cities in the Donbas – the Ukrainian region where Russian troops are now struggling to gain complete control.
