The KHL leadership decided to prematurely end the playoffs of the 2019/20 season due to the coronavirus pandemic. The Gagarin Cup was stopped at the 1/4 final stage, TASS reports.
On March 17, the KHL suspended the championship for a minimum of April 10. The decision of the league was made after consultation with all interested parties and was dictated by the safety of the health of players, fans, club employees and everyone involved in organizing and conducting KHL matches. As stated in the statement, the league developed many scenarios for the further development of events: from playing out the championship by April 30, 2020 to continuing it in June and July. However, based on the discussions, a verdict was issued that at the moment the execution of these scenarios is unlikely.
The Olympic Games were postponed on Tuesday to 2021, earlier it was announced that the European Football Championship would be postponed for a year and the World Hockey Championship, which was to be held in Switzerland from May 8 to 24, was canceled. All the leading hockey championships, in particular the National Hockey League, suspended tournaments even earlier in the KHL. On Wednesday, the Higher Hockey League also announced the early termination of the season. Only the championship of Belarus continues.
As for the hockey team from Primorye, the Admiral players failed to break into the playoffs, so the season is over for them.
