We are at “what are you doing, are you kicking me out?” By now the debate within the M5s is reduced to two alternatives: kicking Luigi Di Maio out or waiting for him to leave. The signs are explicit. And if the men closest to the foreign minister no longer exclude the possibility of leaving the party, the Contian leaders are rattling the saber of the expulsion of the former political leader.
A sensational epilogue, but which is evoked by two of Giuseppe Conte’s five vice presidents. Alessandra Todde, who is also a member of the government, takes part in the role of Deputy Minister of Economic Development. “I believe that Di Maio, speaking in a certain way, is placing himself outside the Movement,” says Todde from the stage of the Blue Forum Network in Gaeta, the same one from which a few minutes earlier Di Maio had thundered against the pentastellate leadership. «I am a cashier, but of course if one poses a theme and responds with personal attacks that is not a problem for me but a drift of the M5s. It is a movement that sees a political radicalization underway: instead of looking to 2050, it is looking back ”, the thrust of the holder of the Farnesina. Precisely followed by Todde’s threats: «We have internal bodies in which to debate, such as the National Council. The discussion must be held there, if it is done in the press, one assumes responsibility for what is done “. Di Maio had also previously reiterated his position on the double term rule. “If we are going back we must not change the two-term rule, I agree with Beppe Grillo”, the Foreign Minister’s reflection. Who then returns to Conte’s political line: “Today the real challenge is to create complex solutions to complex problems, not to have a shopping list”. In the event of a split or landing in a different political container, perhaps “L’Italia C’e” which is preparing to launch the mayor of Milan Beppe Sala, the former political leader could be followed by fifty-sixty MPs. But the numbers are variable and a no to the third term could create pro-Di Maio landslides in the Chamber and Senate groups, even among the Contiani. In fact, the possible solution of granting two other mandates in different institutions – Regions, Municipalities and the European Parliament – does not convince even some big names close to Conte. Above all, the vice president of the Senate Paola Taverna, who according to rumors is showing signs of irritation towards the former premier.
The contians in the first term go straight. Another vice president, deputy Michele Gubitosa, puts the burden on Todde’s statements. “Today Di Maio is a minister of the Republic because he is an expression of the first political force, not because his name is Luigi Di Maio, and I wonder how much the government still represents the M5s, or if he is representing only himself or someone else, as vice president of the M5s I think that all these food for thought must be addressed in the National Council », Gubitosa goes down hard. Conte’s deputy increases the verbal escalation: «Luigi Di Maio’s words are unacceptable mud on the M5s and his community, as well as damage to Italy such as to represent a point of no return. It is very serious that a foreign minister, in a period of delicate war like the one we are experiencing, fosters a climate of uncertainty and alarm regarding the security of his country, accusing his own political community with blatant falsehoods of attacking his alliances and international credibility “. Gubitosa’s sentences raise the doubts in parliamentarians that one of the paths pursued by Conte, in the case of Di Maio’s farewell, may be the request for a government reshuffle to place a loyal loyalist at the Farnesina, or perhaps himself. But, in environments close to the lawyer, the possibility of anticipating Di Maio’s moves is also being explored. The hypothesis of the opening of disciplinary proceedings against the minister is not excluded. The holds offered by the Statute are the prohibition of setting up currents and the “lack of cooperation and coordination with the other Members for the realization of the initiatives and programs of the M5s”.
