Conte to La7: “Meeting with Draghi? I have not raised any government crisis but the country has the right to know about military spending”

“How can we talk about a government crisis? Draghi will also have the right to inform the President of the Republic about the summits that have taken place, but I have not raised any government crises. I’m just saying that, if we have to plan a military spending, a relative majority party can discuss where it goes and how much this spending will be and over what time frame this commitment will be respected? Because respecting it by 2024 is one thing, respecting it by 2028 or 2030 is another thing “. These are the words of the leader of the M5s Giuseppe Conte which, in a tight question and answer with Giovanni Floris in the transmission “Tuesday” (La7), explains his position and that of the Movement against the increase in military spending.

Conte focuses on today’s meeting with the Prime Minister Mario Draghiwhich then in turn went to the Quirinale to update Sergio Mattarella both on the issue of military investments and on positions within the majority.
Floris observes: “The important point of view is not so much his own as that of Draghi and the others NATO countries. You may also be right, however, it can create problems to the detriment of NATO and the unity of the country ”.

The president of the M5s is not there: “You are discussing the unity of the majority and the unity of NATO by putting everything together. They are different perspectives. The Euro-Atlantic position has never been questioned from me in 3 years as prime minister, nor now as president of the M5s, nor will it ever be questioned. President Draghi and I broke up saying that we will re-discuss the issue of the increase in military spending, we will deepen and discuss. But allow me: let’s not feed this perspective of the government crisis ”.

Floris observes: “You know that sometimes intentions do not coincide with the consequences of actions. So, maybe you don’t want the government crisis, but it could happen anyway “.
“No – replies Conte – if you journalists give a misleading and distorted reading, there is this risk. But, look, this risk is not possible, because a relative majority party and the whole country have the right to discuss and know what kind of increase there will be in military spending, because if families don’t make it to the end of the month here, businesses close, there is inflation , the scarcity of raw materials and the expensive bills, one has to explain if this money is there. And if so, he must clarify how they are spent. I think it is right to discuss it ”.
