Beppe Grillo sitting in a subway car in Tokyo (during a trip a few years ago). Next to him a man, presumably of Japanese nationality, dressed as a soldier. And under the caption Oz Onodareference to the well-known Japanese soldier who, almost 30 years after the end of the Second World War, in 1974, in the jungle on the Philippine island of Lubang, was arrested because he refused to believe that the war was over.

This is what appeared this morning on the WhatsApp status of the M5S guarantor, who seems to be sending a cryptic message to the leader of the Movement Giuseppe Contein view of the constituent assembly of the party which will be held over the weekend in Rome, desired by the 5S leader and supported by a large number of members.
It seems to have become a habit now to update the WhatsApp status to allude without speaking: in this case Onoda is the mythical, and real, ‘last Japanese’, while ‘Wizard of Oz’ is the nickname that the guarantor has attributed to the M5S president.
“If the path taken so far is called into question, I will draw the consequences, as is right,” Conte said in the meantime. Rainews 24. “Alliances also fall within the scope of the constituent process: our position and the alliances. It is right that the community of members makes its voice heard and is called to decide”, he continues.
“The problem of the ‘Vaffa’ – he adds – is that we can no longer propose the logic of the ‘Vaffa’ after having assumed the responsibility of national government, over the territories, at a regional, local, municipal level. Today the logic of specific measures, adapted to the needs of citizens” with “concrete solutions to improve their quality of life”.
The former mayor of Turin also intervenes, Chiara Appendino, who accuses: “The lack of a strong identity is causing our wind to be lost in the sails of the Democratic Party. In this unfortunate scheme they are swallowing us up and we have become the minority shareholder, when things go well. Beyond tactics and political geometries , we have to find ourselves.”

1. As an editor for world-today-news.com, I’d like to invite you both to chat with me today about the recent events surrounding the Italian political party M5S and its leader, Giuseppe Conte. To start off, Beppe, can you tell us what inspired your WhatsApp status update with the reference to Onoda and the Wizard of Oz? What message were you attempting to send to the M5S leader and members?
2. Chiara, as a prominent member of M5S, how do you interpret Beppe’s message? Do you agree with his assessment of the party’s direction and alliances? How can M5S differentiate itself from its partners in the Democratic Party without losing its identity?
3. Giuseppe, you mentioned recently that “the logic of specific measures” are necessary for M5S to grow and maintain its identity. Can you provide some examples of these measures and how they differ from your past policies as part of the ‘Vaffa’ movement?
4. Moving on to governance, both of you have held positions in regional and local government. How have these experiences informed your views on governing at the national level? Are there unique challenges or opportunities that come with governing larger territories?
5. Beppe, your trip to Tokyo and encounter with a Japanese soldier is also mentioned in the article. Can you share any insights or learnings from this trip that you believe could be applicable to Italian politics or society? What role do you see Japan playing on the global stage today, and how might Italy seek to emulate their successes?
6. looking ahead to the future, what do you see as the biggest challenges facing Italy and its political parties in the coming years? How can M5S position itself as a solution-oriented party that can address these challenges while maintaining its core values?
