(Tottenham 1-1 Sporting Lisbon) Harry Kane (29) sent all of Tottenham into the air when he sent the ball into extra time, but what “everyone” thought was the winning goal was disallowed.
Tottenham manager Antonio Conte was furious at the uproar after the VAR chaos in extra time in London, and the Italian received a red card for his reactions to the referees team.
– I mean, the ball was in front of Kane and it’s a goal. I don’t understand the line they (VAR) have set. It is very difficult to comment on this decision. The VAR does a lot of damage. I would have liked to have seen a similar goal in a big stadium, for a great team, canceled, ”Conte told BT Sports after the game.
The VAR concluded that Kane was offside when Emerson Royal headed the ball towards the star striker, who threw the ball into the net six minutes into extra time.
The ball also passed through a defender, contributing to the big protests.
Former judge Svein-Erik Edvartsen concludes that the decision is correct:
Immediately after Kane’s goal, pure joy at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the English capital, because with a victory it would have ensured the advancement from the Champions League group.
When the VAR came to its conclusion after a chaotic few minutes, it all turned into despair and a curse for Tottenham.
The group is now fully open and all four teams can advance. Tottenham still have guaranteed promotion with away points against Marseille in a week.
It was former Tottenham player Marcus Edwards who put Sporting Lisboa ahead with a wonderful first-half basket. In the 80th minute Rodrigo Bentancur headed the equalizer after a corner and a mistake by Antonio Adan’s goalkeeper.
Then the drama exploded into overtime.
PS! Next weekend Tottenham will face Bournemouth away in the Premier League.
