The initiators of the citizens’ initiative (BI) “Speyer can do more than containers” are still determined to sue the city before the Neustadt administrative court. According to information from the administrative court, this has not yet happened. “We will sue in any case,” BI spokesman Alexander Romanski said when asked. Thanks to donations, they have “sufficient financial means” and have commissioned a lawyer to file the lawsuit. The lawsuit is directed against the decision of the Speyer city council in mid-March, which had classified the citizens’ petition as legally inadmissible for formal reasons. The municipal parliament had followed a recommendation from the administration. Although the BI had collected 2864 signatures, significantly more than are necessary for a referendum, this was off the table. The BI wanted to let the eligible voters in Speyer vote on whether residential containers for refugees could be set up on municipal property. The BI failed in an expedited procedure before the administrative court, and now the admissibility of the citizens’ petition is to be decided in the main proceedings.
