Housing corporation Rochdale has placed a container with a security camera at the Suri-Change money exchange office in Amsterdam Southeast. Three explosions have recently taken place at the branch on Bijlmerdreef.
The corporation did this at the insistence of residents in the apartments above the branch. They feel unsafe because of the incidents, reported NH News in AT5.
“After three times, the residents are the biggest victim in our opinion,” says a spokesman for Rochdale. The corporation has discussed the camera surveillance with the municipality and is familiar with the system: “We also have these containers on construction sites, so we know how they work.”
The camera images are stored for a week, so that any preparatory actions can still be seen. According to the housing corporation, the privacy of people in the neighborhood is taken into account.
Criminal money flows
The latest explosion at the Suri-Change branch was this week in the night from Wednesday to Thursday. The building was already closed by order of mayor Femke Halsema, who took the same measure for all branches of the chain in Amsterdam.
Five people were arrested in March at the company’s headquarters in Rotterdam on suspicion of involvement in large-scale underground banking and money laundering, presumably originating from cocaine trafficking, city channel AT5 reported.
One of the suspects is said to have used a criminal financial network with branches in the Netherlands, Slovakia and Suriname.
