The Portuguese Government’s response to the control of the covid-19 pandemic received international acclaim. Now, in a stage of deflation, the national R0 – the basic number that measures the spread rate of the virus – continues to hover around 1, a value in which one person, on average, infects another. This figure is above the average of several countries who adopted less stringent containment measures, epidemiologists revealed this Monday at the Infarmed meeting in Lisbon. In Norway, the R is on average 0.83 and in Austria 0.91. In the Czech Republic, which also had a smaller confinement than that applied in Portugal, the R is 0.96 and in Germany 0.87. In countries where confinement was higher, the R is also lower than in Portugal. This is the case of Spain, with R at 0.77 and Belgium with 0.75.
