Contact tracking: Berlin gives up

So far, bars and restaurants have had to document the presence of their guests.

The Berlin Senate passed new corona rules on Tuesday.

The recovered status will be reduced from six to three months after a positive test result. With this decision, the state government is following a recommendation from the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), according to Senate circles on Tuesday.

In addition, the obligation to document attendance in gastronomy, at events, in accommodation facilities and in sports is no longer required. In addition, changes to the quarantine rules and the 2G Plus rules are planned.

“We are observing that the Omicron variant is also putting the measures to the test again,” said Mayor Bettina Jarasch, according to a report in the “Berliner Zeitung”. The Greens politician chaired the Senate meeting on behalf of the Governing Mayor Franziska Giffey (SPD). “One thing does not change: Vaccination remains the necessary remedy,” emphasized Jarasch.

Offices overwhelmed

For restaurants, for example, there is currently an obligation to document attendance, either manually or digitally. However, contact tracking by the Berlin health authorities has recently been reduced further and further, including in schools and daycare centers.

The reason: In the course of the Omicron wave, the authorities are increasingly overwhelmed. For this reason, contact tracing was recently limited to vulnerable groups, such as outbreaks in care facilities or hospitals.

Where attendance documentation is still required, the submission of test, vaccination and recovery certificates will no longer have to be recorded in the future. It is sufficient to enter the contact details.

There is no obligation to test

The Senate also decided on Tuesday to exempt people who are considered “boosted” from the 2G Plus regulation. The additional obligation to test is also omitted for those who have recovered and for those who have just been vaccinated, for each of these two groups for a period of three months.

The Senate also decided that after a corona infection, people no longer necessarily need a PCR test to test themselves out of quarantine. In the future, an antigen test will suffice.

Children are counted

An FFP2 mask requirement for the university sector was also included in the regulation, apart from examinations and lecturers. The regulation for upper limits at events where children and young people under the age of 14 are not counted has been changed: this exception will no longer exist in the future.

For large outdoor events (maximum 3000 people), the “2G plus test” condition will apply in future. FFP2 masks must also be worn at a fixed place.

The amended Infection Protection Ordinance is expected to come into force on February 5th and will apply until March 4th.
