KONTAN.CO.ID – A study found that consuming coffee and vegetables can provide protection against the corona virus. This latest study was conducted by researchers from Northwestern University in Chicago, United States.
The study also looked at other foods, such as processed meats, fruit, tea, and red meat. Marilyn Cornelis, a professor at Northwestern University School of Medicine, is researching how nutrition may play a role in COVID-19 infection.
“We know that Covid-19 is an infectious disease. We know that immunity plays an important role in the ability to fight some infectious diseases. Nutrition affects immunity,” he said webmd.com, Sunday (25/7).
The study used UK Biobank data to examine the relationship between dietary behavior in 2006-2010 and Covid-19 infections for the March-November 2020 period in the same people.
The study involved nearly 38,000 participants who had tested for Covid-19, with around 17 percent of them testing positive for the coronavirus.
Experts look specifically at foods that have been shown to exert an influence on the immune system in previous studies in humans and animals.

Level of protection against viruses
The team found that the nutrition likely provided a modest level of protection against the coronavirus.
For example, consuming one or more cups of coffee a day was associated with a 10% reduced risk of Covid-19 compared to consuming less than one cup of coffee per day.
The greater amount of caffeine in coffee makes this drink more protective against viruses than tea.
Coffee contains more polyphenols, particularly chlorogenic acid, which is actually a relatively unique constituent of coffee.
While eating at least two-thirds of a serving of cooked or raw vegetables daily (excluding potatoes), was also associated with a reduced risk of coronavirus infection.
However, eating processed meat was associated with a higher risk, and not red meat. Processed meat can increase susceptibility to the coronavirus.
