(sda) On average, Swiss consumers want to spend a record CHF 330 on gifts this Christmas. This is the conclusion of a survey by the consulting firm EY. The Swiss want to spend around 2 percent more on their loved ones in 2021 than in the previous year.
The more than 500 respondents would like to spend most of their time on vouchers or monetary gifts. But nobody wants to be stingy when it comes to clothes, toys and cosmetics. What is surprising is that consumers are more willing to spend money on printed books than on electronic gadgets.
The ongoing pandemic is also having an impact on Christmas shopping. Around two thirds of those surveyed said that their Christmas mood was clouded by the pandemic.
The Covid crisis also has an advantage, at least for online retail: compared to 2020, online retail doubled its market share to 33 percent. The pandemic acts as an accelerator here. The department stores still have the largest market share with 34 percent.
The global supply chain problems do not leave Swiss consumers unaffected either. 36 percent of those questioned had the delivery problems prompted them to do their Christmas shopping earlier. However, over two thirds only buy their gifts in December.
However, the delivery bottlenecks are causing consumers more worries: 80 percent expect prices to rise.
