Consumers’ association forces Apple to supply iPhone 12 adapter

According to a consumer association, Apple must supply the iPhone 12 with an accompanying adapter. According to hereafter more countries with the requirement?

Apple used to use the motto ‘think different’, but unique and useful are not synonymous. So also as for charging standard, which the iPhone maker has been difficult about for a long time. Now the billion dollar company has come up with something new; instead of switching to a universal charger, the user will no longer receive an adapter with the iPhone 12 at all. The consumer association in São Paulo disagrees.

‘Apple must supply iPhone 12 adapter’

Several media spotted on the website from the Brazilian consumer association Procon-SP an open letter to Apple. There is a clear requirement from the organization: Apple must supply an adapter with the iPhone 12. If this does not happen (in this case in São Paulo), the company can expect fines.

Since the arrival of the iPhone 12, Apple has been supplying no more adapter for their smartphones, only a lightning-USB-C cable. The iPhone therefore uses a dated charging port, but the cable has a USB-C connection at the end. You rarely just plug it into a PC and few people will have a plug with a female USB-C port lying around.

According to Apple, the omission of the adapter for the iPhone 12 is an environmental consideration. The smartphone packaging is now smaller, allowing for more units to be shipped without additional impact on the environment. At the same time, the company needs fewer raw materials to put together a ‘total package’ for the iPhone 12.

According to Procon-SP (and yours truly) that is nonsense. Users still need to purchase such an adapter if they don’t have one. At the same time, the consumer association suggests that it is nonsense that the price of the product remains the same while there is less in the box. Logical reasoning right? What doesn’t make sense is to get a wireless charger to sell for € 150 without adapter to plug it into the wall.

Apple has not yet responded and it only concerns the region in Brazil for the time being. The rest of the country may go along with the requirements of Procon-SP.
