The consumer protection association Ius Omnibus reported today that it has advanced a popular action against Sony, claiming more than 235 million euros, and that those injured by PlayStation can file a claim for compensation.
“The consumer protection association Ius Omnibus filed on August 3, 2023, at the Court of Competition, Regulation and Supervision of Santarém (TCRS), a popular action that aims to defend the interests of consumers residing in Portugal, injured by the abuse of Sony’s market power with regard to PlayStation’s products and services.
At the origin of the action taken in Portugal “is the system that Sony created around PlayStation and that puts it in a position of total control and thanks to which it extracts advantages and annihilates the competition”.
In this context, Ius Omnibus “provides the following page for all interested parties to follow the case and the affected ‘gamers’ can claim the compensation to which they will be entitled if the association wins the lawsuit:
Since November 29, 2013, “Sony has been controlling and drastically limiting the production and distribution of games and services related to PlayStation 4 and 5, thus creating an anti-competitive environment that has resulted in increased prices for consumers and lower variety and quality of products. products and services available”, points out Ius Omnibus.
The association estimates that “the anti-competitive practices resulted in significant damage to Portuguese consumers and requests compensation to gamers due, until June 2023, which amounts to more than 235 million euros”, it says, adding that, “in the United Kingdom, the Sony is sued for £5 billion”.
This popular action represents “all consumers residing in Portugal who purchased physical or digital games and/or paid for in-game content for the PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 5, as well as those who subscribed to the PlayStation Plus Essential service from November 29, 2013 to the present”, concludes Ius Omnibus.
