Consulate of Spain in Cuba increases appointments to request dual nationality – 2024-03-08 13:05:03

The consular authorities of Spain on the Island shared good news for Cuban citizens who are waiting to obtain Iberian nationality, as the number of appointments for this procedure will see a considerable increase in the following days.

According to an official statement shared by the Spanish Consulate in Havana, starting next March 18, the number of appointments intended to serve these people will increase, which will be good for those who seek to benefit from the so-called Grandchildren Law. and Law 36.

“As of March 18, appointments for Spanish nationals will be expanded by Law 36 and Law 20. Please remember that a reserved appointment cannot be canceled or brought forward. Access to the appointment will be preceded by verification of the identification card number,” the publication reads.

What is the Grandchildren Law?

Law 20/2022, better known as the Democratic Memory Law, or Grandchildren Law, was approved in October 2022, and seeks to grant Spanish nationality to the descendants of citizens of Spain who were exiled for political or ideological reasons, as well as as well as the children of Spanish women who lost their nationality by marrying foreigners before 1978.

These people were initially given a two-year period to submit their files, although the Spanish government recently granted an additional year, so they will be able to continue delivering their documents until 2025.

To apply for dual nationality, a series of documents must be submitted to put together a file. These papers vary depending on the case, but they mostly include apostilled birth and marriage certificates, official identification and, in some cases, documentation that proves the exiled condition of Spanish relatives.

What is Law 36?

Law 36/2002 was approved in October 2002, and was implemented to facilitate the acquisition of Spanish nationality for Spaniards who lost their nationality due to emigration.

It is important to remember that, for both Law 20 and Law 36, Cubans have the possibility of retaining their original documents, something recently approved to help citizens of the Island, where obtaining official documents has been complicated due to the shortage. of stamps and personnel in government offices.
