The agenda of activities that the Consulate in New York has prepared to commemorate the 213 years of the Independence of Colombia begins this Tuesday, July 18, at the Consulate headquarters. At 3:30 pm an audiovisual series called Explora Colombia will be screened, a work that reflects our cultural and historical diversity. The entrance to the community is free.

On Wednesday, July 19, at 3:30 pm, Colombians will be able to enjoy the film Pájaros de Verano, the film portrays the consequences of the “marimbera bonanza”, a time when thousands of dollars entered Colombia due to the illicit export of marijuana on the Caribbean coast, in a community led by women. At the end of the film there will be a conversation about the challenges of Colombian cinema and its festivals. Space that will have three special guests: Juan Carvajal and Ivonne Torres, founders of the Colombian Film Festival, and Natalia Reyes, president of the Colombian Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences. The community will be able to participate in the Conversation.

The following day, the date on which our National Holiday is commemorated: July 20, Consul General Andrés Mejía and the mayor of New York, Eric Adams, will raise the national flag at 2 pm and sing the Colombian anthem at the Bowling Square Park (Broadway and Whitehall st., Manhattan, NY 10004). Place where there will also be a small Colombian cultural sample. Activity that has been coordinated by the consular team and the team of the Mayor’s office for immigrant affairs.

One of the most emblematic buildings in the world will dress in Colombia

At 8 pm on Thursday, July 20, the Empire State Building will be illuminated with the yellow, blue, and red of the Colombian flag. For the first time, a Colombian talent, the renowned actress and president of the Colombian Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences, Natalia Reyes, accompanied by Consul General Andrés Mejía, will turn on the lights of the emblematic building.

The community can join this celebration by raising the national flag this July 20 and sharing their photos on social media with the hashtag #NYCSeVisteDeColombia.
