Construction workers march in Peruvian cities

Lima. Thousands of construction workers marched today in the capital and various Peruvian cities, protesting the murder of two of their leaders and demanding higher wages and respect for labor rights.

The protests were peaceful and there were only minor incidents in the central Andean city of Huancayo, where the police acted against the marchers, according to union sources.

The main demonstration took place in the capital, where workers marched through the city centre and reached the Ministry of Labour, chanting slogans demanding greater security and wage increases.

They also demanded respect for the rights to freedom of association, strikes and collective bargaining, and an end to corruption and official threats of further privatisation.

In a brief speech to the protesters gathered in front of the organization, Minister of Labor Daniel Maurate called for a salary agreement between the Federation of Construction Workers and the Peruvian Chamber of Construction.

Maurate later spoke with the leaders and one of them, Tito Zea, said that they had proposed a purge of the union registry to exclude those that are not unions but criminal groups that, having managed to register with the Ministry, are dedicated to extortion and contract killing.

Zea said that during the meeting with the minister, it was agreed to set up a roundtable next week to review the union registry.
