With a permanent marker, the Mexican Emanuel Gómez put his signature on this beam, just like him, all his other construction workers colleagues made him happy to be part of this project.

Emanuel Gómez, construction worker:

“Very, very proud, I just sent photos to my parents, so they can see what their son is doing, proud. I’ve only been there for five months, I’ve worked more with the underground, plumbing, underground electrical. “

After seven months of work on the metal structure, or skeleton of the city’s new public laboratory, located in Harlem and with all the signatures, including that of the health commissioner, the last beam was placed, on the tenth and last floor of the new scientific center, where the health department teams will continue their research.

Health Commissioner Dr Ashwin Vasan said:

“Especially in the last three years with the coronavirus COVID 19, the work of this team was very important to research and develop new tests for the new virus, there is the infrastructure to support this work and all future crises. ”

Publicly the commissioner thanked the construction workers in charge of the project.

“You are helping so that the next time we face a health crisis, the experts have the best scientific center…” adds Dr. Ashwin Vasan.

Many of the workers are Latino.

“There are many Latinos working here, I believe there are more or less 45% Latinos here, proud of us representing our race, especially in this Hispanic Heritage Month, we are representing not only here, we are spread throughout the world “says Federico Núñez, construction worker.”

Edwin Vázquez also has something to say:

”It is an honor and a privilege to be part of a building so important to the United States, we are here every day to do the best we can to make victory in this building.”

The building is expected to cost $454 million and will be completed and operational in 2026.

Fernando Ortiz, NYC Economic Development Corporation explains:

“We can see up to 300 to 400 jobs in the public health field with this project, and also how this can help the local economy, these people who are going to be working in this building are going to go out to eat, they are going to contribute to the development economic, we are excited to bring these types of projects to Harlem.”
