Construction Waste Dumped on Anderson Road Homes, Subcontractor Fired

Hong Kong Construction Workers Caught Tossing Debris From Heights, Sparking Safety Outrage

Shocking footage has emerged showing construction workers on a major housing project in Hong Kong tossing debris from significant heights, raising serious safety concerns.

The video, which circulated widely online, captures workers at the Anderson Road site carelessly discarding construction waste – including building materials, iron branches, and even prefabricated units – sending dust plumes billowing into the air.

The Hong Kong Housing Authority, responsible for the public housing project, swiftly condemned the actions as "unacceptable" and vowed to take immediate action.

“The Department will not tolerate the bad practices of the main contractor disposing of construction waste from high places,” a spokesperson stated.

Following the incident, authorities met with the main contractor, who has since terminated the subcontractor responsible for the dangerous waste disposal and reported the matter to the Labor Department.

"The main contractor required each subcontractor to temporarily store waste on each floor of the building in designated units…throwing waste from a height," explained a Housing Authority representative.

To prevent further incidents, the Housing Authority ordered all construction workers on site to undergo mandatory safety training, emphasizing again the utmost importance of responsible waste disposal.

News of the incident sparked outrage from the Industrial Injury Rights Association, who called the scene depicted in the video "extremely frightening" and urged authorities to hold all parties accountable.

“Punish the individuals and entities involved, and ensure that such a thing does not happen again," the Association demanded in a statement.

"There have been many cases in Hong Kong in the past where objects have fallen from heights on construction sites, resulting in injury or even death. Throwing objects from great heights endangers the safety of others and must be punished accordingly."

The incident underscores the critical need for robust safety measures on construction sites, not only in Hong Kong but globally. Workers’ well-being and the safety of those passing by shouldn’t be compromised by negligence or shortcuts. As investigations continue, the incident serves as a stark reminder that accountability and unwavering commitment to safety must remain paramount throughout the construction process.
