Construction shift provokes construction frenzy in rural areas

In 123 municipalities – more than one in three – space has been taken up more quickly in recent years than in the previous period. Striking: these often concern rural municipalities with a lot of agricultural land. Especially regions such as the Westhoek, the outskirts around Bruges and the region around Roeselare, but also Limburg and the Kempen are returning. In large parts of West Flanders, the spatial footprint – the space taken up compared to the number of inhabitants – has grown.

The cause is obvious. In 2019, the Flemish government stated in its coalition agreement that it wanted to reform the concrete ban. This led to the less controversial sounding construction shift last year, which should reduce the additional use of open space to zero by 2040 at the latest. The legal framework was approved last May, including a bell jar over reserve building land.

According to De Tijd, it appears that the countryside in particular is still developing new building land in anticipation. In regions where more open space is being developed, a change is necessary.
