Construction sector warns of rising supplies will affect the price of housing

The Dominican Association of Home Builders and Promoters (Acoprovi), the Association of Real Estate Agents and Companies (AEI), the Dominican Chamber of Construction (Cadocon) and the Society of Architects of the Dominican Republic (SARD) express their concern for the Increase in the prices of cement and steel, materials that constitute the main inputs of construction, since they directly impact on the price of housing which limits the purchasing power of the same.

For the years 2018 and 2019 the accumulated increase of cement has been 20.74% and of steel the accumulated increase for the last two years has been of 14%, according to the Housing Construction Cost Index (ICDV), which is lifts monthly by the National Statistics Office (ONE) in conjunction with Acoprovi, says a statement from the entity.

Cement and steel are an important and vital part in the construction process such as the use of concrete, blocks and finishes, so it has an important impact on residential buildings in general, even more so on Low-Cost Housing.

“We reiterate our concern and call on cement producers and steel manufacturers and importers to reconsider the rises applied in such vital inputs of the construction sector given that the cumulative increase would force us to vary the price of homes and buildings ”, Indicates the note.
