The Secretary of Agriculture and Mining of Huila, Engineer Carlos Alberto Cuéllar Medina, carried out a work day in the southwest of Huila, which included a visit to a demonstration coffee farm in the municipality of La Plata, where new strategies are being implemented to improve productivity, such as management of planting densities, renewal of coffee plantations, and fertilization schemes.
This important tour also allowed for a technical visit to the rehabilitation works of several irrigation districts, including Asosantabárbara and Asotriangulo in the municipality of Tesalia, where the change of about 90 meters of high-caliber metal pipes was carried out, impacting about 300 hectares dedicated to rice cultivation.
For the head of the agricultural portfolio of Huila, these works are of vital importance as they allow the supply of water for agricultural work, benefiting families in the area during the dry season, contributing to improving productivity.
“We are very happy to be here on the banks of the Páez River, in the jurisdiction of the municipality of Tesalia, to deliver an important work that was started by the previous government, and which we are currently delivering to two very important associations, mainly rice producers, which correspond to Asotriangulo and Asosantabárbara, where 50 families benefit from approximately 300 hectares of production. We are delivering all the piping from the powerhouse to the discharge point on the corresponding channel, to approximately 90 meters of large diameter metal piping, to replace this infrastructure that, as we have been told, was used for more than 30 years, and that today, thanks to the investment of the departmental government, allows us to rehabilitate and optimize the use of water resources in these agricultural production areas.“, the official said.
For his part, Víctor Félix Rodríguez, legal representative of Asotriangulo, highlighted the management of the departmental government, allowing the rehabilitation of this infrastructure that will serve the community for many more years.
“These works are very good for the community because the pipe that was replaced had completed its useful life, which gives us more peace of mind to be able to pump the water required without the risk of facing damage to the pipe. To say that the importance of this project for the beneficiary families is that they will have safer water in the cultivation areas, in the plots of each beneficiary.“, said the producer.
This visit to the irrigation districts in the municipality of Tesalia also allowed us to learn about other problems and challenges, mainly due to the high production costs, driven by the payment of bills for electricity used in the operation of hydraulic pumps, an issue in which the departmental government has already been making efforts to advance the energy conversion of production systems, moving from conventional energy sources to photovoltaic energy systems.
The works delivered in the municipality of Tesalia were financed through a project worth more than $500 million pesos, which also impacts irrigation districts in the municipalities of La Plata and Pitalito, as part of the departmental government’s commitment to improve the productive infrastructure of rural families.
