Construction of Timau National Observatory on Mount Timau to be Completed by 2023: Updates from BRIN

Jakarta

If all goes well, the construction of the Timau National Observatory on Mount Timau, East Nusa Tenggara, will be completed in 2023. The Aviation and Space Research Organization (ORPA) of the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) is already preparing to carry out its first mission.

“Early next year we plan to have researchers from space researchers from Bandung and several universities. (There are from) ITB, ITERA who have already confirm. It will conduct research at the beginning of the year there,” said Head of ORPA BRIN Robertus Heru Triharjanto, met after the 28th Hakteknas ‘Aviation and Space’ talk show at the BJ Habibie Building, Central Jakarta, Monday (7/8).

The first mission to be carried out, explained Heru, was an initial study to capture imagery in the field of view of the southern sky.

“So he (Timau Observatory) has a view of the southern sky. From there there are several targets to be photographed. So the first (target) is natural space objects such as planets, stars, asteroids, and others,” he said.

He said the research team would also observe satellites in orbit, both owned by Indonesia and those belonging to other countries. This activity can anticipate early detection if an anomaly occurs on the satellite.

“In addition to being a scientific equipment, the large telescope can help with things like that. For example, there is a problematic satellite, it can be seen optically. That is one of our research topics,” said the bespectacled man.

The latest developments in the development of the Timau Observatory so far have been the installation of secondary mirrors. After that, BRIN will install primary and tertiary mirrors.

Meanwhile, the main instrument in the form of a telescope with a diameter of 3.8 meters and a dome with a diameter of 14 meters have been built around 55%.

With this progress, BRIN is targeting that the space monitoring facility which will become one of the largest telescopes in the world will be completed in 2023.
