Construction of the “Lidl” store in Sarkandaugava has started

Following the successful completion of an unprecedented groundwater remediation project in Latvia, the construction of the Lidl store in Riga, Duntes Street 25, will begin this week.

In order to facilitate the flow of traffic and the comfort of pedestrians, Lidl will also build a completely new bridge over the ancient Sarkandaugava here. It is planned that the new Lidl store will open its doors to customers in 2023.

The project for the improvement of the new “Lidl” store building and the surrounding area was developed by SIA “Arhitektu birojs Arteks”, but the construction works will be performed by SIA “Newcom”. The store will be a nearly 2,200-square-foot building with more than 1,400 square feet of large and bright retail space. A special solution has been developed for the facade of the store, including decorative brick tiles, which will create visual connections with the industrial past of this area of Riga.

Residents of the Sarkandaugava area have been waiting for the moment when, after the groundwater remediation project, we can start the construction of the Lidl store to open in about a year. As important as the quality of the products at the best price is for us, arranging the environment around Lidl’s stores by creating greenery, footpaths and infrastructure. We have also invested a lot of work and resources in the development of the Duntes Street store project. It is gratifying that what has been done will significantly improve the state of the environment in this area, ”says Dana Hasana, Head of Corporate Communications at Lidl Latvija.

In parallel with the construction of the new store, Lidl will carry out extensive landscaping and improvement works in the surrounding area – almost 300 shrubs and large tree seedlings will be planted in the store’s territory. A parking lot for 124 cars will be created for the convenience of customers. There are also parking spaces for people with special needs, families, and secure bike racks for bicycles.

As already reported, in 2022, investing almost 800,000 euros, Lidl implemented a unique groundwater remediation project at 25 Duntes Street, carried out by specialists from Latvia’s VentEko and Britain’s ATG Group. A special wall 180 meters long was created along the bank of the Sarkandaugava senupe at a depth of 8.5 meters to filter industrially polluted groundwater.

As a responsible player in the local business environment, Lidl takes responsibility for society and the environment. Therefore, all new Lidl stores in Latvia are highly energy efficient and use only 100% locally sourced electricity.

With the start of construction of the Sarkandaugava store, five new stores are currently being built in Latvia. You can read about the other four new stores here.
