Construction of a large electricity station has started on Strandeiland in IJburg, which will supply the whole of IJburg with energy. Alderman for Sustainability Marieke van Doorninck hit the first pile this morning. Or actually, she plugged it in. Literally.

Eight thousand homes are being built on the still bare, reclaimed Strandeiland on the north side of IJburg. It will take a while before the first stone is laid. The construction of a large electricity station has certainly started. Alderman Marieke van Doorninck started the work by connecting a large fake plug. “What we do here, and what is often forgotten when you build a neighbourhood, is instead of building the houses first, we first make sure that the electricity is in order.”
Relieve the city center
And not just for those eight thousand new homes, but for the whole of IJburg, says Daan Schut, director of energy transition at Liander. “This location is important to be able to supply the whole of IJburg with energy. But also to be able to relieve the city center. There are many electricity stations in the city center, but they are slowly filling up. This station will ensure that we can cover a large part of the city center. unloading, so that extra energy can be put back at the stations.”

“Finding a good place for an electricity station is complicated”
–
In total, there will be about fifteen large electricity stations in the city in the future. And that will be fitting and measuring, says Schut. “Amsterdam is of course a very large city. With a lot of dense buildings, habitation and activity. So finding a good place to build an electricity station is just very complicated. It’s big, isn’t it? You have to find land, but also think of the spatial integration Where can it be placed in such a way that it also gives a nice view, and that it also meets the guidelines of sound. That is complicated.”
–
At the end of last month, grid operator Liander announced that the electricity grid in part of Noord and the port area has reached its maximum capacity. According to Schut, this is the result of a ‘growing economy, the digitization of society, building houses in record time and making the energy supply more sustainable’.
So they could also use a station like here on Strandeiland. “They can certainly also use this in the Westelijk Havengebied. We are of course also looking for a location there, and we have now found it. So there will also be built in the coming years to provide the Westelijk Havengebied with power.”

“Never use more than is really necessary”
–
But what alderman Van Doorninck said before, she repeats today: large consumers of electricity also have to slow down a bit: “We have to build new stations, but we also have to use our energy in a smarter way. So if we get into a situation where If there is too little electricity for a business park, for example, then on the one hand we have to look at whether new cables need to be routed, but on the other hand we really have to look at energy savings with the Amsterdam companies and the people of Amsterdam, because we need a lot of electricity for everything in the city, but you also want us to use it as smartly as possible and never use more than is really necessary.”
