Construction of a deposit system accounting and sorting center has started in Salaspils region :: Dienas Bizness

Continuing the work on the development of the deposit system (DS) infrastructure, the construction of the metal structures of the central accounting and sorting center has been started.

The total area of the premises, including industrial and office premises, is expected to be around 5,500 m2, enabling the center to perform a number of important functions, including the accounting, sorting and preparation for recycling of the deposited packaging.

The central sorting center will be located in Acone, Salaspils region, and will start operating next year.

The developer and builder of the building is a subsidiary of the industrial construction company SIA “PICHE” SIA “P41”.

“When we hand over the packaging to the taromat or acceptance points, it will be just the beginning of the deposit packaging journey, while the most important stop on the way to recycling or refilling will be the central inventory and sorting center, where the packaging will be registered and prepared for recycling. Taking into account the short deadlines for the implementation of the deposit system, we chose a company that has strong experience in the construction of industrial buildings, ”says Miks Stūrītis, Chairman of the Board of SIA Depozīta Iepakojuma Operators.

At the sorting center, all work processes will be provided by 30 to 50 employees, depending on the season. It is planned to start the employee selection process in the coming months.

“Establishment of one common center in Latvia is the most optimal option, taking into account both the national area and the potential volumes of deposit packaging and the need for accurate accounting of used packaging, and the chosen location close to the country’s main roads and convenient delivery of packaging places and manual deposit acceptance places, ”adds Stūrītis.

“Within the project, we work as a developer, designer and builder. The current cooperation with SIA “Depozīta Iepakojuma Operators”, including project development, has been successful and professionally managed. We are grateful that we have the opportunity to implement this project and create an object that will provide the long-awaited deposit system in Latvia. We hope that with the implementation of this system, the set goals will be achieved and we will be able to live together in a cleaner and tidier environment. Currently, construction works at the site are in full swing, so that the building can be clad and insulated until the cold weather. The schedule is tight and the current situation, which affects the deadlines for material delivery, does not make the situation any easier, but we continue to be optimistic and do our best to complete the project within the deadline, ”comments Pēteris Senkāns, Chairman of the Board of SIA PICHE.

The equipment of the deposit system sorting center will be provided by the Latvian company SIA “PERUZA” and the Lithuanian technical engineering company UAB “Motecha”.

The sorting center will be equipped with such technological solutions as industrial presses, packaging accounting and sorting machines, disposable glass shredders, steel packaging separators, scanners and other solutions. The manufactured equipment will be able to perform several important functions, including sorting of transparent and other PET packaging, sorting of aluminum and metal packaging, accounting of manually accepted and glass packaging, as well as preparation of all types of packaging for recycling. It is also planned to sort the disposable glass packaging by colors.

The process of accounting and sorting the deposit package will take place in several stages. After transporting the empty packaging from the stores to the central sorting center, the packaging delivered to the manual collection points will be listed first. After that, metal and PET packaging, as well as disposable glass packaging, will be centrally sorted and prepared for recycling using the most modern accounting and sorting equipment on the market – glass will be sorted by color (clear, brown and mixed), and transparent PET will be separated from the total PET material flow. material, thus significantly expanding its use and promoting the circular economy.

Universal or BBH type design bottles will also be counted – this type of bottles are used by many Latvian beverage manufacturers, therefore after their registration they will be returned for refilling in proportion to the amount of packaging placed on the market by each manufacturer.

The deposit system will be able to transfer packaging of glass, plastic (PET) and metal (cans) soft drinks, all types of beer and other alcoholic beverages (up to 6%). For each purchased deposit package, the resident will have to pay a deposit in the amount of 0.10 EUR, which can be returned after handing over the package, if the transferred package has a special identification mark and barcode registered in the Deposit System Register, as well as the package is emptied.
