Construction fell by 10 percent year on year

“At the beginning of 2020, construction output was growing. Its driving force was civil engineering. From April, however, the data began to show the consequences of the epidemic and the associated state of emergency, “said CZSO Chairman Marek Rojíček.

“Even the latest data for July did not improve this year’s balance sheet and a relatively large decline occurred in both segments. While building construction slowed down its decline, civil engineering fell the most this year, “added Petra Cuřínová, Head of the CZSO Construction Statistics Department.

“The shortage of manpower continues, especially from abroad, and demand is also stagnant due to the administrative unpreparedness of constructions,” concluded Cuřínová.

Compared to June, construction output in July increased by 0.8 percent in real terms. Building construction recorded a year-on-year decline of 10.7 percent, accounting for 7.5 percentage points of the overall decline in construction output.

Civil engineering fell by 9.9 percent year on year, accounting for the remaining 2.9 percentage points.

Construction of 2,740 dwellings began, which is 11.3 percent less year-on-year. 2687 of them were completed, which represents a year-on-year decrease of 9.3 percent.

The approximate value of 7853 construction fields issued in July was 38.4 billion crowns. It thus increased by 20.7 percent year-on-year.
