Constitutionalist Jorge Bacelar Gouveia is being investigated for corruption under the “Tutti-Frutti” process, which has been investigating since 2017 a web of alleged corruption crimes, and influence peddling involving personalities from the PS and PSD, advances the Saturday.
About to be appointed adviser judge of the Supreme Court of Justice, the also university professor and former PSD deputy is suspected of facilitating the awarding of doctorates to students from some African Countries of Portuguese Official Language (PALOP’s) in exchange for compensation, which according to TVI would be diamonds. The suspicions came from a conversation he had with the former PSD deputy, Sérgio Azevedo, who was heard in the Tutti-Frutti process and who was his student at Universidade Nova. TVI says that an inquiry was even opened to investigate the professor.
Bacelar Gouveia ran for the Supreme Court of Justice as a “merit jurist”. The Observer tried unsuccessfully to contact him. On Saturday the constitutionalist guaranteed that he had never been heard in the process. “I don’t know anything,” he said.
The investigation into the Tutti-Frutti case began in 2017, in an attempt to dismantle a web of alleged crimes of corruption, and influence peddling involving personalities from the PS and PSD. At the end of 2018, when Edígio Cardoso was about to retire, the expertise had not yet been handed over to any UPFC specialist. The case ended up being handled by a top PJ specialist, who, by order of the MP, had to hand it over to Cardoso.
