“Caro GiuseppeI am writing to you because, regardless of our differences of opinion, I trust that we both believe that the process that will lead to the vote at the next members’ meeting must be based on criteria that ensure equal access and participation.” Beppe Grillofrom his blog, addresses directly to Joseph Conte to ask for a series of clarifications on the M5S Constituent Assembly process. “Considering that these requests for clarification refer to a process that is already underway, I would be grateful if you would respond to me with kind promptness,” Grillo writes.
In the letter, the 5-Star Movement guarantor asks Conte to explain the selection mechanism for members entitled to vote, “taking into account that membership lasts one year and is automatically renewed in the event of ‘login’ and ‘other participatory activity established by the Guarantee Committee'”. “As for this second renewal method”, Grillo observes, “I learned that, on the recommendation of the Guarantee Committee, you sent a communication to members – I assume only those who have not ‘login’ in the last year – to identify those who intended to renew their membership. In order to evaluate the appropriateness of this method, I would like to better understand how this consultation was carried out, with particular regard to the date on which it was held, the deadline that was granted to members and the information that was given on the movement’s other communication channels”.

“Once the process of determining the members is concluded” the co-founder of the M5S asks to be informed “of its result, that is: the difference between the members before and after the consultation”. Grillo also asks to know “which exponents of the Movement have access to the registry of members and which of these have the right to send them communications and proposals. In this regard”, he underlines, “I anticipate that I believe that among these should in any case be included the main bodies of the association, starting with myself”. Addressing the president of the M5S the comedian insists: “You have publicly declared that on the proposals received, which I understand are over twenty thousand, it will be necessary to establish an ‘order of priority’. Who will establish this order of priority? And how?”. And regarding the “deliberative comparison” phase between “300 randomly selected members”, Grillo asks: “How exactly does this random selection take place? With a draw among all members or among a selection of members, and if so, by whom? How is the draw physically carried out? Will the 300 drawn members then discuss all the proposals received or only a part of them? Will the proposals be divided among smaller discussion groups? In the case of selection and/or distribution of the proposals, who establishes the selection and/or distribution?”
In the last of the six questions submitted to Conte, the guarantor of the M5S speaks of the document that will summarize the various resolution proposals, and which will then be presented to the assembly: “Who will physically prepare this document? All 300 drawn, only a part of them, or an office that will take charge of this synthesis?”, the question raised by the comedian, who also forwarded the letter to the Guarantee Committee, “with which I share the responsibility of verifying the correctness of the above”. And finally the farewell: “Many cordial greetings, Beppe”.
