Console prices over the years

You needed a second job for the PS2.

The Xbox Series X is finally on the shelves and within a few days it will also be the turn of the PlayStation 5. We look back one more time at the last console generation.

Beslist.nl published a study with interesting data from the past console generation. These include sales figures, the best-selling games and indeed, how much they cost at release.

PlayStation

The prices of the original PlayStation, PlayStation One and PlayStation 2 are indicated in guilders in the survey. To convert from guilders to euros, we divided the amount in guilders by 2.2.

The 2 in PlayStation 2 clearly stood for “second job”. After all, you needed that if you wanted the most expensive console from the list at home. Fortunately, the slim version was a lot cheaper (and lighter).

Xbox

The Xbox has already had an interesting (and especially complicated) history. With the Xbox 360 there were many different variants: Xbox 360, Xbox 360 Core, Xbox 360 Elite, Xbox 360 Arcade, Xbox 360 S and Xbox 360 E. Of all those variants, the Xbox 360 S with 4GB of storage space was by far the cheapest. (199.99 euros). 4GB was enough for your save files, but not for downloading games or DLC. Then you had to foresee an extension. This could, for example, simply be done by inserting a USB stick into the console.

Since the Xbox One X costs the same as the current Xbox Series X, production of the Xbox One X has been discontinued. The same goes for the digital version of the Xbox One S, which is also no longer produced in favor of the Xbox Series S.
